What is this?
The Open Device Lab is a completely free-to-use resource in the heart of Bournemouth for testing and developing on modern devices. It’s open to all: freelancers, students, in-house teams, and tech companies.
At it’s simplest, we provide a community pool of devices for anyone to book and use. We don’t personally test for you, but we leave you to it.
The intention of an Open Device Lab is to provide a central open resource for anyone to use. In today’s world websites and apps must be tested on real devices, but with the millions of unique devices and countless platforms out in the world, many companies or individuals simply cannot afford to purchase devices. Open Device Labs hopes to solve that with a community-pooled resource of devices for anyone to use.
Whether you’re testing a native app or a responsive website, the wealth of devices in user’s hands means that getting hands-on with real devices is more important than ever. We want to help everyone build better stuff in Bournemouth by providing these devices and we’re proud to see projects improve in quality thanks to the lab.
We’re proud to be the largest Open Device Lab in the world.
Visit the Lab
If you’d like to visit the lab before you come and test, please drop us a line. We’ll be happy to show you about and answer any questions you might have.
You can rate and view us on opendevicelab.com.
We have Handbooks available if you want to learn more about testing on Web, iOS or Android.
Anyone can participate by lending or donating devices to the lab. If you’re able to contribute something, (devices, expertise, whatever!) please get in touch. All donated devices still belong to you and if you need them back, they’re available for you. All our donators are recognised on the device list.
You can also help us to improve the lab (better wifi router, powered USB hubs, device stands, etc). If you think you can help with that, get in touch at [email protected].
Join our mailing list at the bottom of this page to follow us to keep up to date on what’s happening. We also tweet at @odlbmth.
Find the Lab and get directions on Google Maps here.
Parking for the lab can be tricky as we’re in the heart of Westbourne. Your best bet is Marks & Spencers car park or the public pay & display behind the Libertine pub, both across the road from the Base studio. You’ll see signs for Base in between Gallery 65 and Corals. Head straight through the door to the top of the stairs, where you’ll find the Base front door. Give it a buzz and we’ll let you in!
